I might carry a Swiss army knife with a screwdriver and tweezers because those are pretty useful, but I don't even take keys out of my pocket without looking around first because I don't want to die from some frightened cop pissing hs pants and emptying his Glock into my chest before screaming at me to put my hands up.
A training meme made the rounds in cop school awhile back where a guy with a rubber knife and chalk on it charges a cop from 20 feet away while trainee tries to get his service weapon out of its holster. Trainee gets chalk all over him every time of course. He is told over and over that anyone with a knife 20 feet away could easily kill him and that's why he has to shoot first. That sticks in his mind and he tells that story over and over to all his buddies. The results are predictable.
